When Should You Attend the Accident and Emergency Department?
Please remember that the Accident and Emergency Department should only be used for accidents and genuine emergencies such as severe breathing problems, severe chest pain, severe bleeding and possible strokes.
For less serious problems there are a variety of other options as follows:
- Ask your pharmacist for advice
- Use the Patient.co.uk website which has a symptom checker and offers useful health information and guidance
- Contact 111 – details of your problem will be taken and you will be given advice or seen by the out of hours doctor if deemed necessary
- Consider attending the St Mary’s Treatment Centre in Portsmouth until the practice re-opens.
In a genuine emergency you should call 999. Chest pains and/or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.
